Ferdinand lived in a castle in Horkheim. The castle of Horkheim was built towards
the end of the 13th century as a "Wasserschloß". In the
16th century to the medieval part a small Rennaissance-castle was added. This
however burnt down in about 1838 and was rebuilt in the classicistic style of
that time.
It originally was the seat of the Lords of Horkheim, but since about 1340 it
had many different possesors and lost all its rights over Horkheim. 1461 it became
a "Lehen der Pfalz" and remained that until 1806 when it came to Württemberg.
The last owner of nobility sold it 1840 to a farmer of Horkheim.
The wife of Ferd. Joh. Wilh. von Engelbronn inherited the castle, - her grandfather
had bought it in 1622. After the von Engelbronn their daughter Johanna Ludovica
Regina lived here together with her husband Johann Ernst Christian von Schütz,
and after them their son Maximilian Karl Friedrich Ludwig Christian von Schütz.
After his death 1748 (no children) the Kurfürst of the Pfalz sold the castle
to one of his ministers.
