2. Matthias ENGELBRUNNER1,3,4,5,6,7,8 was born about 1530 in Biedermannsdorf, Modling, Niederösterreich, AU. He died on 7 May 1613 in Graz, Steiermark, AU.
Matthias initially was an officer in the Archducal Regiment of the Inner Austrian Territories. Matthias became a Court official in the service of Archduke Karl of Austria. In 1567 he was appointed Court-Feeding-Clerk (Erzherzoglicher Futterschreiber). In 1568 he became Commissioner of the Ordnance Commissariat of the Province Styria “landschaftlichter Zeugskommissar in Untersteier” (erwähnt d.d. Aussee 16.8.1567, und Graz 23.1.1568).
His son Christoph Hans stated that Matthias and his brothers Balthasar and Paul received a Patent of Nobility and Armorial Bearings from Archduke Karl of Austria. The “Lt. Exulantenkartei Doblinger” in Graz ordered Matthias in August 1600 and in March 1602 to emigrate. That he and his son George remained in Steiermark probably meant that he formally gave up his protestant faith.

Matthias was very wealthy “recht wolhabend “ and lived in a large house ,Herrengasse, in Graz. His inheritance contained expensive household effects, arms and jewelry including a sapphire ring with inscription 1571 which the Archduke Ferdinand II had presented to him. The ring was probably presented when Matthias took part in the shooting tournament at the festivities for the marriage of Archduke Karl with Princess Marie of Bavaria. At that time Matthias must have been still officially a catholic although his son Georg had already been baptished a lutheran (evangelisch) .

The Engelbrunner brothers Balthasar, Matthias and Paul were exempted from tax on the Engelbrunner Coat of Arms 18 Feb 1564. Description of this Coat of Arms is in the National Library of Austria.
