Third Generation

7. Christoph ENGELBRUNNER1,13,14,15,16 was born in 1575 in Wenen, AU. Evangelisch gedoopt. He was also known as Commissarius Engelprunner on 12 Dec 1631.17 He died on 12 Jan 1641 in Stuttgart. He was an Obervogt, Junker. Vertreter einer Person oder Körperschaft, die in einer bestimmten Situation nicht selbst tätig werden kann

He was Bailiff (Pfleger) of Biedermannsdorf, Bez.Mödling NÖ, the estate was owned by the Liechtenstein family until 1607.
He took service with the Imperial Court and in 1621 he was a Paymaster (Kriegs Zahlambt diener) in the Imperial Army Pay Office (Hofkammerarchiv, Akten der Hoffinanz, 1621, Prot. Expdt.s.29, 12 Jänner ). In the absence of the Imperial Paymaster-in-Chief Engelbrunner was acting Paymaster-in-Chief at the Hungarian Diet (Reichstag ) as well as at the Imperial Diet and Congress of Princes at Regensburg (1630). The last reference found is a letter end 1630 send to Warcommissioner (Kriegskommissar also called Commissarius) Engelbrunner end 1630 in which is referred to the Regiment zu Fuss of Colonel Julius Count von Witzleben

The Hofkammer archivs mention his wife twice that year:
1.Dorothea Englprunnerin travelpass letter for household effects and several persons to Frankfuhrt am Main;
2.Travelpass letter for Dorothea Engelbrunnerin and her family through the Holy Roman Empire to her husband.
Frankfurt-am-Main was the constitutional centre of the Holy Roman Empire.

Christoph apparently decided to leave the Imperial Service because of his protestant faith. From 1631/2 -1634 Christoph served the Regent of Württemberg at his Court in Stuttgart (Pfeilsticker, Wurttembergische Dienerbuch, §§ 396 & 2804 ). In the battle of Nördlingen on 6 Sept.1634 the Imperial (Roman Catholic) forces defeated the Protestant and Swedish troops. Stuttgart (and Württemberg) fell on 20 Sept. and the Emperor established control over Württemberg. The Heilbronn league troops under Bernard of Saxe-Weimar withdrew in November to the leftbank of the Rhine (Elsas). Christoph and his family fled to Strassburg as did the Regent and the ducal family.

From 1634-1640 Christoph was Generalkommissar to the King of Sweden in Strassburg , Elsass. End 1640 he went back to Stuttgart as Chiefguardian (Obervogt) of Duke Eberhard III von Württemberg. He died a fortnight after his arrival in Stuttgart. Dorothea, her two daughters Salome and Katharina, son Christoph and the daughter of her husband`s brother Joachim Maria Magdalena were taken care of by the Duke`s family and the girls were educated wih the princesses at the Court.

Christoph Hans sent a Petition to the Roman Emperor, King of Hungary and Bohemia etc. for Zuerkennung des Reichsadels und Wappenverbesserung with copies of the Patent of Nobility (sub A), Armorial Bearings (sub B) and Noble Coat of Arms (sub D) granted by Your Imperial Majesty`s etc. Highly Honoured Father The Imperial Highness Archduke Karl to my father and his offspring born in wedlock and their heirs/heirs. The Petition was for himself and for his only surviving brother Joachim.
At the time he sent the Petition, Commissarius Engelbrunner was posted to the Army of General the Duke of Mecklenburg, Friedland and Sagans as Mustercommissioner and Quartermaster-General and he was staying in Meinigen until further orders of the Imperial Military Council.
The Imperial Assent of this Petition is highly probable because the newly granted Coat of Arms is in the Austrian State-archives (Allgem. Verwaltungsarchiv, Reichsakten, Wappenbuch II, S.18).
